Stellenbosch Wine Festival

Early morning on Sunday, at a time of a very few are going to the Church, I’m leaving Cape Town Waterfront on to the N2 to Somerset West.

Then take the M310 and finally I got in touch with the first Estate, Meerlust. Few km away the local capital, Stellenbosh.

Today it’s Wine Festival in Stellenbosch.

Best time to taste the 500 wines around, early morning when everyone sleep.

Interesting overall tasting, average range wines that still reflect the 5 wards within Stellenbosch.

Focus on syrah first, quite disappointing, cause all the ones tastes were over cooked and jammy, only De Morgenzon 2008 and Rust En Vrede 2005 stood out.

Cabernet Sauvignon as a very good potential in Stellenbosch, wih some very good classic style in Kanonkop, some juicy Le Riche and some modern yet pleasant Idiom ones.

Pinotage is still trying to find its path, and is suffering from overpowering and high alcohol content. Try to harvest earlier and French oak guys !!!

Otherwise the Show is marvellous, there is worst place than overlooking Simonsberg sipping a glass of Chenin Blanc !

Cheers till next Show.
